PRSSA to host etiquette dinner

Public Relations Student Society of America will hold a business etiquette dinner at 6 p.m. today at the Holmes Student Center’s Hunt Room.

The discussion at the dinner will be about how to handle yourself during a meal with a potential employer.

“Some things we’ll talk about is what fork to use and the proper way to eat soup,” said Ellen Anderson, assistant director of the Career Planning & Placement Center.

Anderson said if there is a second interview, it is held with a lunch or dinner meal about 50 percent of the time.

“The biggest mistake people make is to think that it is not a part of the interview,” Anderson said.

The presentation will focus on how to eat a meal with professionals and also will discuss the actual interview process.

Anderson said she has held these types of presentations before, but this is the first time with PRSSA.

PRSSA President Jennifer Sherman said the event originally was for the members of PRSSA only, but it was a great opportunity, so they decided to open it for everyone.

“It’s a popular trend to take people out to lunch for an interview,” Sherman said. “It can be an intimidating thing.”

The cost was originally $9 but has decreased because of fundraising.

Kathleen Murphy, secretary and internship coordinator in PRSSA, said this would be an important event to attend if people will be in contact with business people in the future.

“In college, we are so used to eating out of bags,” Murphy said. “When we get into the real world, there are certain expectations.”

Participants are required to dress in business attire and are asked to call Murphy beforehand to reserve a spot, especially if they require a special meal.

Students can chose between a chicken or vegetarian entree, and special situations can be accommodated.
