Here comes the crush

The Rolling Thunder Monster Truck Challenge will return to DeKalb when it comes to the Convocation Center on March 5 and 6.

Tickets for the event go on sale at 10 a.m. today and can be purchased at the Convo Center box office or any Ticketmaster location.

The Rolling Thunder Monster Truck Challenge came to the Convo Center last year and did three shows, said Kevin Selover, marketing manager for the Convocation Center.

“I would say it was successful for the building,” Selover said. “The biggest thing it did for us was show our versatility.”

Selover said the tires of the monster trucks had to be taken off to get the trucks into the arena. Tons of dirt also had to be brought in to prepare for the show, he said.

Selover said the show did well last year, and he is hoping for 2,000 to 2,500 people per night to attend the monster truck show this year.

Last year, between 7,000 and 8,000 people showed up.

In addition to monster trucks, the show will feature a wide range of motorsports, Selover said. He said the monster trucks are the headliners, but there also will be free-style motorcross with motorcycles jumping 40 to 50 feet in the air.

There also will be Harley pulls, Selover said, which are similar to tractor pulls but with motorcycles.

Lawnmower races also will be featured at the event, Selover said.

Doors open at 7 p.m. March 5 and 6. Shows start at 8 p.m.
