Bowl brings soul to NIU

The Center for Black Studies, Zeta Phi Beta and Phi Beta Sigma will host the Soul Bowl celebration at 5 p.m. today.

Sheri Cox, vice president of Zeta Phi Beta, said the event’s purpose is to bring NIU together as one big family.

“During the Soul Bowl, we will remember and honor our ancestors and show appreciation to staff and faculty who serve as great leaders and role models on campus,” she said.

Cox said there will be soul food served at the celebration. She encourages students to bring a dish, but it is not mandatory.

In addition to serving soul food, the Soul Bowl also will feature music and Libations, the African tradition of honoring ancestors. Cox said there also will be an opportunity for students to read poetry. The African pledge will be performed as well.

“I would encourage students to come out to this event because they can embrace African-American culture and join in a peaceful dinner at NIU,” Cox said.

The Soul Bowl will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Wesley Foundation, 633 W. Locust St., behind Founders Memorial Library. Cox said the Soul Bowl is free and open to all.
