Summer studies offered in England

The NIU summer study program is looking for students to go to St. Catherine’s University in Cambridge, England for summer school.

NIU English professor William Williams, program coordinator, said there are limited vacancies for the July 4 through August 12 trip.

The $3,995 total cost of the trip, excluding airfare, covers tuition, room and board, special events and field trips.

Financial assistance is available for the students.

Williams said classes at St. Catherine’s will run from Monday through Thursday, the same as NIU summer school, and students have the next three days to experience the many cultural benefits England offers.

“We do try to allow the students to take advantage of England and the continent,” he said.

Students typically travel to London or to Spain to view plays performed in the surrounding areas, Williams said.

There are two field trips planned during the six weeks classes will be in session. The first is to visit Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. The trip will conclude with a play at the Royal Shakespeare’s Company.

The second field trip has not yet been decided, but will probably consist of a trip to Stonehenge and Bath. The Social Science Department will be responsible for coordinating the second field trip.

The graduate and undergraduate students who attend the trip will stay in dormitories at Cambridge. Students will have their own rooms with private baths.

Williams started the program 23 years ago and it has been successful every year. Only 28 students are admitted each summer and about half of those students come from other accredited universities across the country, Williams said.

Anyone interested in spending the summer at Cambridge should fill out an application at Lowden Hall and leave a $100 deposit to the Office of International and Special Programs. The application deadline is May 1, and students are taken on a first come, first serve basis.
