Panoramic band to perform today

By LaShaunna Watkins

Panoramic, a band specializing in Caribbean music, will perform at 9 p.m. today at The House, 263 E. Lincoln Highway.

Panoramic is composed of Liam Teague (steel drum), Robert Chappell(keyboard), Orlando Cotto(congas), Doug Stone (saxophone), Phil Beale (drums) and Josh Ramos (bass). Teague, Chappell and Cotto are members of the NIU music faculty.

The music performed will be primarily rhythms of Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Trinidad. Chappell said Teague is an expert in the method of playing the steel pan.

“Liam Teague is considered one of the best steel pan players in the world,” Chappell said.

Chappell said this performance is the first concert of a “mini-tour.” The group will travel to several universities in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana to perform.

The performance will feature original compositions from Chappell and Teague. Chappell said the music can be best described as “Caribbean jazz.”

Panoramic has traveled the world, Chappell said. The group’s first performance was in the National Concert Hall in Taiwan. More recently, Panoramic performed at the World Music Festival in Chicago.

“Students should come hear the world’s best players,” Chappell said.

Admission will be $5.
