No rest for the wary as NIU moves on

By Matt Kerlin

Yesterday, NIU vs. UNI. Today, NIU vs. NIU. What next?

The Huskie baseball squad will start the second half of it’s second longest road trip of the year in Chicago today when it faces the Golden Eagles of Northeastern Illinois in a twinbill.

The Huskies split a doubleheader with conference rival Youngstown State on Tuesday, and most recently played another doubleheader against Northern Iowa yesterday.

The Golden Eagles are coming off a big win over Chicago State, 18-5. The Huskies swept that same team in a doubleheader in their home opener.

Leading the Golden Eagles at the plate will be Mark Misiek and Bob Klemme. Misiek is leading the team in batting average (.337) and on-base average (.410).

Batting .318, Klemme leads the Golden Eagles with seven doubles and a triple.

The Huskies, despite outstanding pitching, have not been able to put up the big wins this season. Part of the reason has to do with the trouble at the plate. Huskie hitters may finally have their chance to get back into the swing of things against Northeastern pitching. The Golden Eagles don’t have one pitcher with an ERA under 5.00, and are sporting a team ERA of 6.33.

Leading the Huskies into battle is Mike Birsa. Birsa is 50th in the nation batting .411, and leads the Huskies in batting average and home runs.
