Ja Rule: Blood in My Eye

By Erin Wienke

Ja Rule’s fifth release, “Blood in My Eye,” is 45 minutes of pure beef.

Ja strays from his proven strategy for success, takes away all Top 40 appeal and cuts Ashanti out of the formula — sending her packin’ like Puck on “Real World.”

-From the first few seconds on the album’s intro to the last second of album’s finale “The Wrap,” the overuse of profanity and bashing of other artists doesn’t stop. This album is Ja’s attempt to go back to his “roots” he has been criticized for not representing. Ja seems to have something to prove since 50 Cent called him soft. Harder beats and obscenity-laced lyrics are revived, but they don’t have as much feeling as earlier releases.

The first single “Clap Back” has catchy beats that might be worthy of radio play; however, Ja’s lyrics might keep him off-air. Claiming that “Christians got the freakiest bitches of all the religions” isn’t going to make him popular with the soccer moms of the preteens who usually enjoy his music.

Throughout the album, four skits are presented that aim and fire at shot-worthy 50 Cent. In “Punk Ass Quarters,” Ja growls “50 Cent, this is what this is all about/ Two punk ass quarters.” Many more sophomoric jabs taken at 50 continue.

“Race Against Time 2” is the best track, with the most coherent lyrics and least inane profanities. This one song is not enough to salvage an album based on complete animosity.

Whether Ja Rule is starting problems to boost record sales, the mudslinging may captivate audiences for a few tracks, but ultimately will bore them. If barking up 50’s tree isn’t enough, he slings mud at Dr. Dre and Eminem.

It’s hard to appreciate Ja Rule’s musical ability when his latest release is filled with distracting slander. He claims it’s all about “sex, money and murder,” but this album is all about killing 50 Cent, killing 50 Cent and, just to change it up, killing 50 Cent.
