City council to discuss tax levy

By Robert Filicette

The DeKalb City Council will discuss the 2003 property tax levy at its Monday night workshop meeting.

The city must file its annual property tax levy to the county by Dec. 23. This will leave the city seeking about $2.7 million that would be applied to the city’s 2005 budget.

The current tax rate for an owner of a $150,000 home would be $302.82, with a $15.14 increase. For a $200,000 home, an increase of $20.18 will be added to the current rate of $403.75.

The next consideration to be heard at the workshop will be DeKalb’s building codes.

City Manager Jim Connors said last year’s building codes, along with two others, were combined to create a new international code.

Because DeKalb still uses an original set of building codes, the community development department will present an ordinance to the city council that would adopt the International Code along with a collection of other building codes. This would allow the city to be updated and have an advantage in attracting business and industry to the city.

A consideration also will be heard for a management benefit proposal to discuss further information and costs.

Recommendations for the benefits include an increase in vacation to five weeks after 15 years, as well as an increase in the amount of sick leave.

The workshop meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the City Council Chambers, 200 S. Fourth St.
