Halloween Bash to benefit AIDS patients in Africa

Delta Sigma Theta sorority is hosting its first annual Halloween Bash.

The event was set up to offer local children an alternative to trick-or-treating, said Tia Kirkling, member of Delta Sigma Theta.

“As a public service organization, we felt that it was our duty to provide a program for the children of DeKalb and surrounding areas where they can be safe and enjoy themselves this Halloween,” said Devin Scott, member of Delta Sigma Theta.

Kirkling said although they have some volunteers, they will need more. She said they are looking for people to volunteer to implement and conduct game and activity booths.

“Our main goal is to create an environment for the children so that they will have as much fun as possible without getting hurt,” Kirkling said.

Because the event will be held on family weekend, NIU students are encouraged to bring their younger siblings or other family members to the event, said Candace Smith, member of Delta Sigma Theta.

She said in addition to the booths, there will be movies shown to the children. There will be no charge to attend the event, although 25-cent tickets will be sold for various games and other activities.

There will be a haunted house at the event. There also will be face-painting, snacks and various games and prizes.

Smith said the proceeds from the event will go toward AIDS research in Africa. More specifically, the money also will go toward the AIDS pageant, which is an event for children in various regions of Africa affected by AIDS.

“It’s a way to show children that even though they are affected by AIDS, they are still beautiful,” Smith said.

Smith said Delta Sigma Theta still is seeking donations. Students, organizations and local businesses are encouraged to donate money for the Halloween Bash. There will be an activity book made for the children, which will have advertisements for local businesses, she said. Smith said everyone who helped with the event also will be recognized in the book.
