The NIU hockey club outscored Robert Morris College 18-2 in a two-game series over the weekend in Rockford.

The Huskies won the first game 9-2 before shutting out RMC 9-0 in the second game.

NIU was 1-5 heading into the two-game series, with all six games against Division-I opponents. Both RMC and NIU are D-II clubs.

In Friday’s game, Carl Musillo led the Huskies with five points on two goals and three assists. Brian Lucca added a hat trick for the Huskies.

Robert Martinez, NIU’s starting goaltender for the game, got his first win of the early season, stopping 17 of the 19 shots he faced.

“The team really put it all together in that game,” NIU hockey club president Darcy Follard said. “We also got great goaltending from one of the great goalies on our team.”

Andy Burrows was NIU’s starting goaltender for the second game. He stopped all 20 shots he faced to help complete the sweep by NIU. This was Burrows’ second win of the season.

Carl Musillo again led the team with four points on two goals and two assists. He finished with nine points for the weekend. Rich Pierzynski led the defense with two goals.

“Everyone stayed well-disciplined, staying out of the penalty box,” NIU center Tom Alagna said. “This series will really help us take some big momentum into the weekend against Bradley.”

The Huskies play their first conference game against Bradley University this weekend in Rockford. NIU’s first Mid-American College Hockey Association game is 10 p.m. Friday at the Carlson Arctic Ice Arena. The second game is 6 p.m. Saturday at the Riverview Ice House.
