Get your groove on

Illinois’ largest 21-and-under dance party is bumping and grinding its way to DeKalb.

Platinum Productions’ Sonic Music and Dance festival is scheduled for Sept. 27 at the Convocation Center.

Patrons can expect a variety of music, including everything from Top 40 to techno. The event also will include prizes, giveaways and interactive games.

Kevin Selover, director of marketing for the Convo Center, said the show is being promoted in many ways.

“Fliers are being distributed around the NIU campus and many other community colleges,” Selover said. “There are high school representatives that are helping get the word to their friends, and ads are also being placed in newspapers.”

Selover said the Convo Center chose Platinum Productions because it thought NIU was a good market because of its location between Rockford and the Chicago suburbs.

Rockford radio station 97 WZOK is co-sponsoring the event and is running TV commercials promoting it.

The event also will host several bands from NIU, and attendees will be able to get their palms read, according to www.platinum-production.com.

Convo Center staff expects as many as 4,000 people to attend the event, Selover said.

University Police are teaming up with Convo Center security to make sure the dance party is a safe environment.

According to University Police Lt. Matthew Kiederlen, there will be two officers on duty. That number can increase depending on the size of the crowd.

Kiederlen said his department is not very concerned about the possibility of “club drugs” being present at the party, but said police is ready for the possibility.

“It hasn’t been too prevalent here,” Kiederlen said, “but these things obviously happen.”
