BBQ for awareness

Sigma Lambda Gamma will host a free barbecue today at Central Park to raise money for breast cancer.

Simone Lamothe, a member of Sigma Lambda Gamma, said the event and the food is free, but students are encouraged to give donations.

“We hope to spread awareness about breast cancer and raise money for the cause,” she said.

Jennifer Mora, also a member of Sigma Lambda Gamma, said breast cancer is the sorority’s philanthropy. Proceeds from the event will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which is a society that works to find a cure for breast cancer.

“This is a great cause,” Lamothe said.

“If we don’t do anything about cancer, then we are not doing our job as a sorority,” Mora said.

Mora also said students should come to support the cause because everyone is affected by all types of cancer. She said someone might have a friend or family member who is affected.

“One way or the other, cancer affects all of us,” she said.

Lamothe said Sigma Lambda Gamma is trying to reach out to students who may have someone in their lives who is affected by breast cancer.

“We hope to educate the campus and the community about the realities of breast cancer,” she said.
