We Care Pregnancy Center holds seminar

The We Care Pregnancy Center, 403 N. Fifth St., will be holding a Volunteer Training Seminar on Sept. 20.

The seminar is for anyone interested in volunteering at the center, and also an opportunity to learn what the faith-based community organization is about.

“The training is about 20 hours, in a classroom setting provided by certain speakers from our community, videos and a training manual,” said Katie Mehne, director of the center.

After attending the seminar, anyone interested in becoming a peer counselor will receive additional information on service training.

“So if at the end of the training a person decides they want to be a counselor, they would be working with an experienced counselor to learn the way the counseling is done,” said Mehne. “There is also a help-line center where people call for help, and the callers are forwarded to people at home.”

The pregnancy center offers assistance to women and their partners who may be experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. All services provided are free.

It is primarily a volunteer organization. Volunteers help out by providing free and confidential services like pregnancy tests as well as maternity clothing, infant clothing and equipment, according to a press release. They also have pregnancy option education.

“The center also has information about abortion, adoption and other pregnancy options, as well as tips for parenting and relationships,” said Mehne. “If you haven’t been in the situation, then you have no idea of the resources that are available in DeKalb.”

Client services coordinator Julie Hawkins said she decided to join so that she could put her beliefs into action.

“I love it,” she said. “I love connecting with moms. I love connecting with the women that come here. It is a really neat ministry, and I enjoy it a lot.”

The center needs volunteers for reception, peer counselors, and help-line workers. Men and women who are interested in volunteering at the center, or anyone who is interested in finding out more about the center and its ministry should attend the seminar on Sept. 20. Registration is necessary.
