Stadium Club license suspended

After a recommendation by City Attorney Margo Ely, Mayor and Liquor Commissioner Greg Sparrow issued Stadium Club a 30-day liquor license suspension which began Friday.

Stadium Club, 1311 W. Lincoln Highway, violated its Class E license by having a two-week period in which its kitchen was closed and only alcohol was being served. The establishment also was charged with allowing minors into the bar.

Sparrow reiterated that Stadium Club is classified under the Class E license, which requires the establishment to sell 60 percent food and non-alcohol beverages and 40 percent liquor.

“It’s not a bar; it’s a restaurant first and a bar second,” he said.

Stadium Club has only had its liquor license for one year, and during that year it has had two violations, Sparrow added.

The previous violation, which occurred in September, was for serving alcohol to minors.

The suspension will last until 2 a.m., or Saturday night closing time, Aug. 10.

According to a press release by Ely, Stadium Club is not permitted to sell or serve alcohol, and all of its alcohol must be stored in a locked location during the suspension.

Ely and Sparrow both think Stadium Club received a worthwhile penalty.

“I felt that a serious suspension was necessary,” Ely said.

Sparrow said that 30 days is the maximum suspension given to an establishment before its license is revoked. He also said he is trying to make it known that owners of establishments with Class E licenses cannot commit offenses like the Stadium Club did.

“How serious does it have to get before they realize they can’t do this?” he asked.

Stadium Club was unavailable for comment.
