Illinois State Police and the DeKalb Police Department issued 93 tickets during a five-hour roadside safety check Thursday on Illinois Route 23, north of Dresser Road.

The check was aimed at seat belt compliance, child passenger safety and alcohol-related laws.

Of the 93 tickets issued, 41 were for use of an uninsured vehicle, 35 for seat belt violations, nine for not having a valid driver’s license and three for driving with a suspended license.

“They hoped to make the roadside safer and make sure that the people who are driving on our roadways are licensed to do so,” said Master Sgt. Lincoln Hampton of the public information office in Chicago.

State police have been conducting the roadside safety checks periodically since July 1. The checks ended Monday.

During the checks, every fourth or fifth car is pulled over. Police then run a routine check, looking for a valid driver’s license, license plates, insurance, seat belt violations and making sure drivers don’t have a warrant.

Hampton said the checks usually are conducted during the holiday season, with more possibly being scheduled around Labor Day.

The safety checks are funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
