Jazz at the Lagoon

The blaze of the summer heat and pending budget constraints haven’t stopped the Campus Activities Board from moving full steam ahead with its lineup of programs for summer.

“We try to get a good variety of events and provide something for summer students to do,” said Brooke Beyers, programming vice president for CAB.

On slate for the summer are films, bands, day trips and the 12th annual Jazz in the Night event, which may vanish from programming next year because of a trimmed budget.

This Saturday, the ducks and geese on the East Lagoon will have the company of canoe passengers watching renowned jazz artists playing.

“It’s a picnic area festival, sort of like Ravinia … music in the park, under the stars,” said Lesley Clements, activities adviser for CAB. “Bring your lawn chairs and picnic-baskets.”

Starting at 5 p.m., there will be inflatable games for the children and canoe rides on the lagoon provided by the Office of Campus Recreation.

Kathy Kelly, a Chicago-based vibraphone artist, will open the program at 7 p.m. and will be followed by six-time Grammy award nominee Kurt Elling and the Laurence Hobgood Trio.

Last year, the event drew a crowd of 500 people.

“It’s a thank you, wrap up, last event of the year to the local community and students who supported CAB throughout the year,” Clements said.

Also this summer, every Tuesday at 8 p.m. CAB plays free movies at the Holmes Student Center’s Carl Sandburg Auditorium.

“All of our films are fairly new; they’re blockbusters,” Beyers said.

Last Tuesday, a showing of “Bowling for Columbine” drew about 90 people.

At noon on Wednesdays, students also can stop at the King Memorial Commons to enjoy live bands for an hour.

“It’s an easy place to stop, hang out and enjoy the sun,” Beyers said.

For students who want a change from the DeKalb scene, CAB’s trips to the Shedd Aquarium and Great America provide transportation and tickets at low prices.

Thirty seats are available for the trip to the aquarium and 45 seats for the trip to Great America.
