Kelly Clarkson

The American idol finally has released her debut album after months of preparation.

Kelly Clarkson is known for her big smile and even bigger voice, which carries her through the mediocre tracks on “Thankful.”

The lead single “Miss Independent” has Christina Aguilera written all over it. The vocals are very similar to the recent Aguilera single “Fighter.” The single doesn’t have anything to make it special, and completely lacks originality.

One of the few decent tracks on the album is “Thankful.” The bluesy sound and Clarkson’s voice make it an awesome track.

There is nothing beautiful about the disastrous “Beautiful Disaster.” The album definitely makes a turn for the worst with this song. It has the feel of a late ’80s tune The Bangles would have done. The lyrics are downright terrible, but somehow Clarkson’s voice powers her through the poor song.

Clarkson invites fellow “American Idol” contestant Tamyra Gray to join her on “You Thought Wrong.” Talk about pairing up two very powerful voices. From beginning to end, the duet sounds beautiful, earning this track my seal of approval. The track is reminiscent of Brandy and Monica’s hit song “The Boy is Mine,” but with more of a rock feel.

“Anytime” is a strong song that shows off Clarkson’s tremendous range. It is a ballad reminiscent of a female version of Barry White or Luther Vandross. Considering the other tracks, it reveals how much talent Clarkson really has.

There are two remixes on the album, “A Moment Like This” and “Before Your Love.” The songs are listed as remixes, but they never sound different from the originals. Both songs are powerful and display Clarkson’s voice to the utmost. Each bonus track has been released.

The album as a whole is a letdown; it sounds overproduced and unoriginal. After listening, it leaves you without a clue of what Clarkson is trying to be. Maybe a pop star or maybe a rhythm-and-blues singer. Whatever route she chooses, there is no denying she can sing. Clarkson needs to stop focusing on what producers want her to sing and just do what she feels.

With a voice as amazing as Clarkson’s, “Thankful” should have been way better. Her next album needs to be a huge success if she wants to continue in the music industry.
