‘8 Mile’

By Kim Krichbaum

Last November, Eminem shocked the world and proved that not only could he rap, but he could act.

“8 Mile” is a tale of Eminem’s life as the rapper, Jimmy Smith Jr. or, as his friends call him, Rabbit. As the movie opens, we see the aspiring rapper perfecting his moves in the bathroom of a local club. He seems confident until he goes to throw up.

When he hits the stage with best friend and show host Future, played by Mekhi Phifer, he lets the other contestant in the rap battle go first, and the competition proceeds to tear him apart. When it’s his turn, he freezes and cannot perform.

This is a story of a talented, yet troubled individual growing up in a very difficult situation who just wants a real chance to show the world that he can rap. He just wants the opportunity to showcase his talent and let it take him to another level in life.

The movie continues by showing Rabbit’s trials and tribulations up until the final rap scene where he is faced with the challenge of out-performing the best rapper around.

The DVD gives you four options to choose from, pan-and-scan or widescreen, censored or uncensored versions. The widescreen version makes the movie look incredible. There are many parts where it was extremely dark and was hard to see exactly what was going on, but with the widescreen feature, things are put into a new perspective with more light and better clarity.

One of the best features of the DVD is the video for Eminem’s song “Superman” off the album “The Eminem Show.” This is the only place you will see the video. The video is extremely racy, which is why it is separated into uncensored and censored versions. It contains adult film star Gina Lynn playing Eminem’s love interest. The uncensored version contains some nude scenes with Gina Lynn, and even a scene with Eminem showing off his bare posterior.

There is also a behind-the-scenes look at how “8 Mile” was made. This includes never-before-seen footage that again is divided into the censored and uncensored categories.

The DVD also showcases five rap battles of Eminem performing. There are also 25 minutes of deleted scenes for your viewing pleasure.

The only way this DVD could be better is if it contained more of Eminem’s videos. Surprisingly, the Oscar-winning song “Lose Yourself” was not featured on the DVD.

Anyone who is an Eminem fan should run out to the store and grab a copy of “8 Mile.” It is a must for anyone who enjoys his work or just those who enjoy hip-hop music.
