Elgeme Adolphi inducts 12 members

Elogeme Adolphi Sorority Inc. inducted 12 new members into its organization at the Corner Stone Module ceremony Saturday at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.

The church was packed with students eagerly waiting to see their friends and colleagues become inducted into this religious organization. According to its Web site, Elogeme Adolphi is an organization that promotes unity in plurality. To signify unity, the inductees were required to wear identical clothing.

“This not only is an induction, it is also a time to praise the Father God Almighty,” said Kristal Sutton, president of Elogeme Adolphi, as she addressed the congregation.

Jennifer Jennings, Inreach/Outreach committee member for the organization, said Elogeme Adolphi was established in 1987 at Bradley University by Evangelist Mattie P. Dawson. “Elogeme” means blessed of the Lord and “Adolphi” means sister.

The ceremony started with the inductees marching in singing, wearing jeans white T-shirts with a pouch containing seven stones.

There were seven stones because seven is the biblical number of completion, Jennings said. The inductees were required to wear the pouches at all times.

“They wear the pouches to stand out from everyone else and open up the door to the ministry and witnessing,” Jennings said.

Each inductee performed a monologue speaking to God about their hopes and fears about school and joining the organization. The girls also performed a skit and a spiritual dance.

The national adviser for Elogeme Adolphi, Judy Hendricks, addressed the inductees and the congregation by expressing how proud she was that the young ladies completed the process. Because the inductees were given the name “Pearls of Perseverance,” Hendricks compared the way a pearl was formed to the intake process the young ladies went through. Hendricks also spoke about spiritual necessities.

“God is not concerned with beauty or sex appeal, he is concerned with the heart,” Hendricks preached.

She then proceeded to allocate certificates of completion to make their membership official. This was then followed by the candlelight ceremony. Members of the sorority then named the inductees with their spiritual name and explained why.
