The Chicago Brass Quintet, a world-renowned band with over 30 years of experience in wooing audiences, is coming to NIU. The group, part of the CAB Fine Arts Series, will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium.

The Quintet members are known for combining their talents to produce a unique mix of musical programs.

According to the Illinois Arts Council Web site, the band boasts the music of Vivaldi, Bach, DeFalla, Ewazen and Copland, and it performs other pieces in the style of George Gershwin, Dizzy Gillespie and Andrew Lloyd Weber.

Throughout its career, the quintet has created six albums and has toured throughout Taiwan, Brazil, Canada and much of the United States.

The quintet has performed for other colleges, including Southern Illinois University and Western Illinois University.

According to a review by the Washington Post, the quintet is packed with “technical brilliance, taut ensemble, flashy programming and a touch of humor… This quintet [maneuvers] through a maze of demanding works with a high degree of polish.”

The quintet is producing interest on campus.

Senior kinesiology major Sopheap Long is not familiar with the band, but she would consider seeing it perform.

“I took a dance class, and I had to dance to that kind of music, and I liked it,” she said.

Tickets will go on sale starting Thursday at the Holmes Student Center box office. The cost will be $5 for NIU students, $8 for NIU faculty, staff, senior citizens over age 65 and children and $11 for the general public. Tickets also may be ordered online at www.niu.edu/CAB.
