Meeting to address DeKalb refuse concerns

By Jennifer McCabe

DeKalb’s recycling question still is unanswered as the city has scheduled another public informational meeting.

The purpose of the meeting is to inform DeKalb residents about the proposed changes to the current refuse and recycling systems contract.

Representatives from DeKalb County Disposal (DCD) as well as the DeKalb City Council will be available to go over each of the proposed changes and to answer any questions about the refuse and recycling program.

There are 14 proposed changes that DCD and the city would like to explain in detail to the residents.

There may be adjustments to the contract and that is why the city council is holding the meeting.

“We continue to be interested in receiving feedback related to the changes we have proposed to the refuse and recycling program,” said Cameron Davis, administrative assistant of DeKalb Public Works.

The city wants the community to be informed of everything about their refuse and recycling, according to Davis.

The city council gave its tentative approval for the proposed changes on Feb. 8. They then asked the staff to incorporate the changes into a contract agreement by the March meeting.

As for the renewal of the contract of DCD, it looks good, according to Davis. “The city council has been pretty supportive of DCD. According to the recent survey, 92 percent of the residents consider the services of DCD either excellent or good. We would just like DCD to continue to do the good job that they have been doing for so long,” Davis said.

DCD has served DeKalb for 20 years and has gone through many contract extensions. This newest extension will be for the next four years.

Anyone who has any questions about the refuse and recycling program in DeKalb can attend the meeting, which will be held on 7 p.m. Tuesday on the second floor of the Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St. If there are any questions, call the DeKalb Public Works Department at 748-2020.
