Truck crashes into building

A sharp turn proved costly Tuesday evening as a Wal-Mart delivery truck crashed into a building at the corner of Lincoln Highway and Seventh Street.

DeKalb police responded to the call at 9:32 p.m.

The driver of the truck, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he was taking the produce freight to a Wal-Mart located on County Farm Road.

He added that he was driving south on Seventh and turned west onto Lincoln Highway. When doing so, another vehicle cut in front of him causing him to swerve and avoid a collision, he said. This caused the driver to hit the building at 665 E. Lincoln Highway. This building houses apartments and Security Finance Corp.

No one was inside the building at the time of the accident, DeKalb police Sgt. Jim McDougall said.

The collision forced the truck to tilt and rest against the building, causing the trailer to nearly fall over, McDougall said.

“A trailer doesn’t always follow directly behind the cab of a truck,” DeKalb police Cpl. Burton Johnson said.

Building supports were ripped off and a window was smashed, shooting glass up to 20 feet into the building. The traffic light at the intersection also was mangled, Johnson said.

Building inspectors were present to ensure it was safe to go back inside.

The trailer had two large cuts in it, together spanning about 15 feet, exposing the trailer’s insulation. Despite the collision, the driver said he still was going to deliver the products.

Traffic on Lincoln Highway and Seventh Street was directed by DeKalb police until about 11:15 p.m.

A full report is expected today.
