DeKalb Fire Department to host Sept. 11 ceremony

By Joe Martillaro

DeKalb will commemorate Sept. 11 with multiple events.

The DeKalb City Council will declare Sept. 11 as “Patriots Day” in DeKalb, assistant city clerk Tonya Christensen said.

Additionally, a traditional fire department bell ceremony will occur at 9 a.m. at Fire Station 1 on 700 Pine St.

The remembrance ceremony at the DeKalb Fire Department will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks and those who lost their lives.

The ceremony will consist of some short readings and religious speakers, DeKalb Fire Chief Lanson Russell said.

The ceremony, normally performed at firefighters’ funerals, will consist of specific bell soundings that call for firefighters to return to headquarters.

“These guys have completed their mission and are being called home to their creator,” Russell said of the bell ringing.

The names of the 343 firefighters who perished will be read at the ceremony.

The bells will ring at 9:05 a.m., when the South Tower collapsed, and again at 9:28 a.m., when the North Tower collapsed.

“It will be very emotional,” Russell said. “It affected all of us here. DeKalb fighters attended some of the New York fighters’ funerals.”

The DeKalb Police Department has decided to attend the fire department’s ceremony to pay tribute to the firefighters who were lost because of the attacks, DeKalb police Lt. Jim Kayes said. The public is allowed and encouraged to attend the event.
