Arena scare turns up false alarm

University Police officers searched unattended bags, under seats and the roof of the Convocation Center during the arena’s Sept. 11 memorial Wednesday night.

“We had a citizen come up saying he saw something suspicious,” University Police Lt. Matthew Kiederlen said.

According to Kiederlen, the citizen said he saw a person carrying an item that looked like something it shouldn’t be.

“We investigated it and it turned out to be nothing,” Kiederlen said.

UP officers also were seen walking around with Kazan, the force’s canine used to sniff out bombs and drugs.

Kiederlen noted that suspicion was high because of an emotional Sept. 11 anniversary.

The commotion started a little after the memorial services began, but audience members didn’t seem to notice police doing anything out of the ordinary.

Arena Project Manager Joe Coots said he wasn’t surprised by anything.

“I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary,” he said.

When there’s an event like that, police have standard procedures to follow, Coots added.
