No epic win in exhibition game

Chick Evans Field House was the site of an exhibition basketball game Thursday night.

That was one of the few positives the NIU women’s basketball team could take away from its performance as it dropped a 57-43 decision to the Odyssey.

It was a tale of two halves, as the Huskies had a 27-20 lead at the half. The Odyssey started the second half with a 12-0 run and outscored the Huskies 37-16.

The Huskies made only six of 26 shots in the second half and committed 16 turnovers, 31 for the game.

Junior Kim Boeding led the Huskies with 10 points on 5-of-12 shooting while Anne Clark and Diane Kowall scored eight points apiece for the Odyssey.

“I think in the first half, our defense wasn’t nearly as bad as the second half,” said Boeding, who pulled down eight rebounds. “We did some good things in the first half. Ball pressure, we made them turn over the ball a lot.”

Six-foot-1 freshman Jamie Wilson made her presence felt during the course of the game, scoring seven points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Wilson also had three of the Huskies’ four blocks and led the team with four steals.

“Not really, I would like to win,” said Wilson when asked if she was pleased with her performance. “I’m just happy my first game is out of the way. I don’t really think about my stats.”

The game started off promisingly enough for the Huskies, as they tore off an 11-0 run to take an 11-4 lead. The run was finished off by Wilson, who drained two freethrows with 13:47 left in the half.

The Odyssey never got closer than three points the rest of the half. Boeding scored the final six Huskie points of the half while sophomore Lindsay Secrest contributed seven points to the Huskies’ first-half cause.

“My first reaction is I like to tell it how it is; it was ugly,” said coach Carol Hammerle, beginning her fourth year leading the Huskies. “Second half, we didn’t transition at all. We had no defense, we couldn’t put the ball in the hole. We just basically fell apart. There’s no other way to say it.”

The Huskies play a second and final exhibition game Nov. 8 when the Chicago Challengers visit DeKalb.
