Level II programs spice up weekend

NIU’s level II programs were in full tilt over the holiday weekend.

But one of those “deprived” groups performed with the escitement of a level 1 program.

The NIU gymnastics team, attempting to bounce back from mistakes in Muncie, dominated in DeKalb on Saturday in its first home meet of the year.

With a lofty tally of 187.70, the ladies nailed every event in the triangular victory. The Huskies (2-4) boasted the top four spots in each event and the top two in the all-around.

The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh calimed second with a 173.05 while Winona State University posted a 168.40.

The complete roundup of Saturday’s fiesta will be in tomorrow’s Star.

The NIU swimming and diving teams split a pair of meets in their Indiana tour this weekend. Both the men’s and the women’s squads defeated Mid-Continent Conference foe Valparaiso 143-72 and 136-90, respectively.

The very next day, the Huskies traveled to South Bend only to be handed a loss by the Fighting Irish 140-87 and 173-70, respectively. However, all was not lost as diver Margaret Turner scored a 248.10 in the one-meter diving event, which was good enough to qualify her for the NCAA Zone C Championships in March.

The men hold a 2-4 record, while the women own a 3-3 ledger.

Shannon Gregory, Jim Kossakowski, and T.C. Dantzler were the only three to post individual victories as the NIU wrestling team fell to the University of Illinois 33-10 last Friday at Chick Evans Field House.

“Shannon, T.C. and Jim wrestled tough for us tonight,” said NIU head coach Phil Rembert. “We wanted big points from them, and they did as much as they could, we just couldn’t come through as we wanted to as a team.”
