Fraternity ‘busts out’ in first event of year

By Maria Tortorello

The members of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity will be hosting a weekend of “Bustin‘ Out” festivities to open the first of the fraternity’s celebrations for the year.

The weekend will begin with a welcoming celebration for the new members of the fraternity from 10 p.m. until 3 a.m. Friday.

To close the weekend, a pre-step show and Ladies’ Night will take place from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday. Both events will be held in the Regency Room of the Holmes Student Center.

At Friday night’s party, the new members will be welcomed and given gifts such as sweatshirts and paddles.

A pre-step show and twirl-offs will take place on Saturday.

During twirl-offs, the few members of the fraternity who can best twirl a cane will put on a performance.

According to Marcus Chapman, vice polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi, the fraternity chose the theme “Bustin‘ Out” because this is the first event of the year presented by Kappa Alpha Psi.

“We didn’t have any functions for the first semester,” Chapman said. “So, it’s like we’re bustin’ out.”

Chapman said the fraternity also got the theme idea from singer Rick James’ album “Bustin‘ Out of L7.”

The main goal behind the weekend is to give a preview of a Valentine’s Day ball Kappa Alpha Psi will be hosting.

“We want to give the people a little taste of what they can expect at the ball,” Chapman said.

The ball will also be a celebration for the fraternity’s 25th anniversary. It is scheduled to take place from 7:30 to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13 in the Holmes Student Center.
