Huskie soccer club finishes year with win

By Jim Trentadue

The NIU women’s soccer club finished its season last weekend at Illinois State on a positive note with a 3-0 victory over the Redbirds to end the season at 6-4-3, but more importantly, winning its last thre matches.

This marked the last outdoor match the women’s team played as a club sport. The team will be considered a NCAA team for the outdoor season next fall but will still be a club sport for the indoor season.

As for the game, NIU showed its strong team effort once again by out-hustling its opponents to every opportunity. The Huskies beat the Redbirds to every ball and did a good job of passing the ball.

NIU scored its first goal early in the first half as Debbie Vickus scored on a breakaway shot to give the Huskies the early lead. Due to good defense by both sides, the score remained the same for the rest of the half.

The Huskies increased their slim one-goal lead with five minutes left in the game when Laura Santoro scored off an assisted play from Vickus and co-captain Vicki Thompson.

The third and final goal was scored with only two minutes left as Thompson scored an emotional goal, with an assist from Maggie Tucker.

Once again, goalie Diane Dorn had an excellent outing, shutting out the opponent for the third time this year.

The Huskies’ team work and unity were the obvious factors in this game as they were for the team’s good season. The girls are now looking forward to the indoor season, then next season as an official NCAA team.
