DeKalb residents receive stimulus checks

DeKALB — Residents of DeKalb received an Economic Impact Payment Wednesday from the IRS to help combat the downturn of the U.S. economy.

U.S residents or citizens not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s taxes are eligible for a $1,200 individual stimulus check, according to the IRS website. They must have a work-eligible Social Security Number and be under the adjusted gross income determined by the IRS to receive the deposit. The adjusted income ranges from $75,000 to $150,000 based on the filers status. An additional $500 is given for any dependent child under the age of 17.

While most college students aren’t eligible for the payment since they are dependents of their parents or guardian, some can still receive payment. If a college student isn’t a dependent of another taxpayer and meets the requirements of the stimulus, they may receive a payment. Tax information can show a student financially supporting themselves in order to qualify for the payment.
