Volleyball team takes win streak to WIU

By Brian Hayes

The NIU volleyball team will spend Homecoming on the road.

The ladies will be traveling to Macomb Saturday to take on the Western Illinois University Westerwinds. The Huskies are trying to extend their winning streak to 10 matches and keep their conference record unblemished.

NIU comes into the match with a 5-0 record, good for first place in the Mid-Continent Conference, and a 13-2 record overall. The Westerwinds head into the match 4-1, good for third place in the Mid-Con, and a 6-7 record overall.

Western Illinois is taking this match seriously. The Westerwinds played the same two opponents NIU faced last weekend with the same result: straight-set wins over Youngstown State and Cleveland State. They then scheduled no matches this week to give themselves time to prepare for Saturday’s match.

The Huskies will have to contain senior outside hitter Kim Phillips. She ranks fourth in the conference with an average of 3.98 kills per game. She is also among the league leaders in digs, hitting percentage and aces.

The Westerwinds will have to try and contain various Huskie weapons. Amy Foulke leads the team in kills with 154; Kori Schauer leads the team in attack percentage.

On defense, Shelby Snyder leads in digs with 163, with four other players over the century mark in digs.

NIU won last year’s lone meeting between the intra-state rivals in straight sets. The Huskies lead the all-time series 12-9-1.

First serve at Brophy Hall on the campus of Western Illinois University is slated for 7 p.m.
