Soccer club records first road win of year

The NIU women’s soccer club continued its good defensive play with another shutout in a 1-0 road win over the Blue Demons of DePaul last Sunday.

The Huskies next travel to Normal to face host Illinois State this weekend for their final match of the outdoor season and their last match as a club sport.

NIU women’s outdoor soccer will be recognized next year as an intercollegiate sport, despite women’s indoor soccer being considered a club sport. The Huskies expect to begin their indoor season next month.

The team’s record is now at 5-4-3, and with Sunday’s shutout of DePaul, it marks the team’s second consecutive shutout and third of the season.

It also marks the second win over DePaul as the Huskies defeated the Blue Demons earlier in the season, 7-1.

The lone goal for the Huskies was scored by defensive midfielder Mindy Cerretti, who brought the ball in herself.

The Huskies had over 20 shots on goal but was just not able to score as the shots were blocked.

But Cerretti’s goal proved to be enough for NIU as goalie Dawn Spridz held off the Blue Demons for her first shutout of the season.

“I was happy with Dawn because it was her first game in goal and it was a shutout,” said Huskie coach Vlada Jevremovic. “It was a good game and I thought the girls played well.”

The win was the women’s first road victory of the season, and the first coached victory for Jevremovic.

The Huskies will be looking to repeat a past performance against the Redbirds this weekend as NIU defeated ISU earlier this season, 2-1 in DeKalb.
