Soccer squad drops two

The NIU women’s soccer club traveled to St. Louis last weekend with hopes of repeating its winning ways like the previous weekend.

Two weeks ago, the Huskies defeated Illinois State 2-1 and tied Valparaiso 3-3.

This past weekend, NIU faced two junior colleges—Merrimac and Florrisant Valley.

Two junior colleges, no problem, right? Guess again.

The Huskies’ opponents were ranked No. 1 (Merrimac) and No. 5 (Florrisant Valley) in the nation among junior colleges and proved to be formidable ones as NIU was defeated on both Saturday and Sunday.

Although NIU was whipped 6-1 on Saturday, the Huskies gained a learning experience against a nearly flawless Merrimac team, who are the defending NJCAA champions and winners of their last 27 matches.

“We have never seen a team with this type of caliber. Although the game was frustrating, it was a learning experience,” said NIU head coach Vlada Jevremovic.

The Huskies’ lone goal was scored by Laura Santoro, with an assist from Mindy Cerretti.

NIU next faced Florrisant Valley on Sunday and dropped the game, 2-1, in what proved to be a tough, physical and even-matched game.

Despite the loss, the Huskies played strong defense and held together behind goalie Diane Dorin.

“We really bounced back and played great on Sunday,” Jevremovic said. “I’m pleased with our solid defense and especially pleased with Diane.”

The only goal for NIU was from defender Rachael Schneider on a penalty shot.

The team’s record is now at 3-4-3, with its next match at home on Saturday against the University of Iowa.
