Last week in the world of sports: 11/2 through 11/8

DeKALB — Whether it was Notre Dame defeating Clemson, NIU losing to the University at Buffalo or the Boston Red Sox rehiring Alex Cora, this week has been an eventful week for sports.

 

NCAA 

There were many major college football games this weekend. One that was important was ninth-ranked Brigham Young University defeating 21st-ranked Boise State. BYU is now 8-0 for the first time since 1984.

Indiana University defeated the University of Michigan to remain undefeated and move to tenth in the country and the University of Southern California defeated Arizona State to kick off a wild Pac 12 conference season. 

25th-ranked Liberty University beat Virginia Tech University on a crazy finish to remain unbeaten and Marshall University defeated the University of Massachusetts to remain undefeated as well.

The University of Florida defeated the University of Georgia in a big rivalry game for the first time in four years and the University of Notre Dame defeated the University of Clemson to snap a 36-game regular season win streak for Clemson. 

 

Mid-American Conference

Kent State University defeated the Eastern Michigan University and the Western Michigan University defeated the University of Akron on Wednesday to open MAC play. 

The University at Buffalo defeated NIU 49 to 30 and Central Michigan University defeated Ohio University. 

To close out the night on Wednesday, the University of Miami–Ohio defeated Ball State University and the University of Toledo destroyed Bowling Green State University.

 

NASCAR

Chase Elliott, driver of the number 9 Chevrolet ZL1 Camaro, won the NASCARr Cup Series cSunday at Phoenix Raceway. This is his first Cup Series Championship at 24 years old. 

His father, Bill Elliott, was very successful as a Cup Series driver in the past, winning the championship in 1988. 

 

NHL

The NHL has made plans to start their 2020-21 season on Jan. 1. The NHL also plans on having fans in the stadiums, socially distanced, during the regular season. 

 

NBA

The NBA Board of Governors and the NBPA agreed to a plan Thursday to start the 2020-21 season on Dec. 22. 

 

MLB

The Boston Red Sox rehired Alex Cora Friday after firing him after he was revealed to have cheated with the Houston Astros during the 2017 World Series and possibly the Boston Red Sox in 2018. 

 

Upcoming MAC games

There will be more MACtion this week. On Tuesday, Akron will play Ohio. Both teams have no wins. Kent State will play BGSU. To finalize the night, Miami will play Buffalo.

On Wednesday, EMU will play Ball State and Toledo, who crushed BGSU, will play WMU. To finish the night, CMU will play NIU in DeKalb on ESPNU. 

 

Other upcoming NCAA games

The seventh-ranked University of Cincinnati will try to remain undefeated on Friday as they will play East Carolina University. 

On Saturday, Pac 12 conference action will continue as the University of Oregon plays Washington State University and the University of South California will play the University of Arizona. 

The University of Indiana Hoosiers will look to remain unbeaten as they play Michigan State University. 

Coastal Carolina University, Liberty University and Marshall will look to remain undefeated through week 11.

Second-ranked Notre Dame will play Boston College, who almost upset Clemson, as Notre Dame comes off of a huge win against Clemson. 

The night will conclude with a huge Southeastern Conference rivalry as the University of Alabama, who is top-ranked in the country, plays Louisiana State University. 

Also, the University of Wisconsin Badgers will finally get to play Big 10 conference action after clearing positive COVID-19 cases and will play Michigan on Saturday night on ABC.
