Fundraiser also promotes safety

The Alpha Phi sorority is going out of its way to make sure that students are protected while walking around campus.

Alpha Phi Philanthropy Chair Darcy Dreyer said the sorority will be selling “Defiance,” a type of legal mace, at the Office of Campus and Recreation from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and possibly Friday.

There also is a chance, if tables are available, that “Defiance” will be on sale at Wirtz Hall sometime next week, she said.

Dreyer said “Defiance”, valued at $19.90, will cost a bargain $7.

She said the chemical is available in a bottle or keychain style. A yellow-orange identifying dye with capsicum sprays from the bottle, which irritates the eye, she said. There are 20 sprays per bottle.

Dryer said the main reason for selling “Defiance” is to promote obvious safety precautions, but it also is being sold as a fund raiser for the Heart Foundation.

She said Alpha Phi received a letter from the foundation that stated they were asking for a sorority to sell the chemical on a college campus. She said everyone liked the idea so she decided to go ahead with it.

“I think the idea of selling mace will work well,” she said. “We’ve been selling a lot of them already.”

She said this is the first year the sorority has participated.
