City to post signs on proposed development sites

By Stephen Pritzen

Beginning this week, public notice signs will be sprouting on any number of proposed development sites in DeKalb to inform residents of what could be developed on that property.

The public notice signs describe the property as being the subject of a public meeting to be held in the DeKalb Municipal building to decide what, if anything, will be developed on that property.

A telephone number also will be posted on the signs so those driving by and curious about what’s being proposed for the site can call and get information.

These public notice signs will be posted on various locations, said City Planning Director Mark Biernacki.

“From here on out, sites that are either the subject of annexation, rezoning, subdivisions, special use permits or anything that pertains to a pending development proposals will have a sign displayed,” he said.

Biernacki said these signs will provide notice in addition to the public notification in the classified ads, and the direct mail notices that are sent out to all property owners within 250 feet of any given property that is subject to a development proposal.

“We hope to reach even more people, if nothing more than to let them know as to what is occurring in or around their neighborhood,” he said.

Biernacki said the signs will be posted on the property from the date of application through final city council action.

Decisions on property that will have public notice signs posted are “subject to whoever walks in our door with a formal development proposal,” he said.

One of the first sites to have a public notice sign displayed is 2205 Sycamore Road, the former Johnson Printing building.

The Hytel Group, a precision electronics company, was granted a request by the city council Monday to locate their business in the building.

Hytel’s emphasis in precision electronics is on circuit boards, ceramic treatment to the electronic component of said circuit boards and related precision electronic processes.

The approval involves annexation of the property to the city of DeKalb and its rezoning from “A,” Single Family Dwelling to “ORI,” Office, Research and Light Industrial.
