Meet the Candidates’ night to include forum

DeKalb County residents are invited to “Meet the Candidates” night tonight at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau Building.

“The night is a good way for DeKalb County residents to meet one-on-one with the candidates,” said Greg Millberg, governmental affairs director for the DeKalb County Farm Bureau. “It also gives them a good opportunity to relate their individual concerns to the candidates.”

The DeKalb County Farm Bureau Legislative Committee and the League of Women Voters of DeKalb County are cosponsors of the event.

Candidates will be available to address individual concerns and will have literature and other information for visitors from 7 to 8 p.m.

Candidates running for the offices of county board, circuit clerk, states attorney, county coroner, 14th Congressional District of the U.S. House of Representatives, 35th State Senate District and 70th House District state representative will be in attendance.

Selected candidates will begin an open forum where audience members can ask questions at 8 p.m. Millberg said the forum is basically the same format as a debate.

The first forum will be from 8 to 8:30 p.m., between candidates for the 14th Congressional District of the U.S. House of Representatives, Democrat Jonathan Abram Reich and Republican Dennis Hastert.

From 8:30 to 9 p.m. candidates in the race for the 35th State Senate District, Democrat John Nelson and Republican Brad Burzynski, will have the floor.

The final forum, from 9 to 9:30 p.m., will involve candidates in the 70th House District State Representatives, Democrat Kay Phillips and Republican David Wirsing.

Those attending the forum can pick up a booklet containing information about the candidates, such as their background and views.

Millburg said he expects a good crowd this year, especially because it’s a general election year.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau Building, 315 N. 6th St.
