DeKALB — The men’s golf team was set to open up the 2021 competitive season Feb. 20 against 37th-ranked Arkansas State University in a dual-meet format in Jonesboro, Arkansas, but due to severe weather across the southern portion of the U.S., the meet has been postponed.
The winter storm that has been ravaging portions of the southern U.S. is the cause of the postponement, according to NIU Athletics.
Jonesboro is expected to see a daytime high of 33 degrees Saturday, according to the National Weather Service, which would make competition next to impossible outdoors.
Over the past two days, parts of the south have experienced unseasonably cold temperatures, excessive amounts of ice and snow accumulations totaling between 1 and 2 inches.
There are no plans for NIU to make up the meet this season against the Red Wolves, according to NIU Athletics.
The Huskies will now open up the 2021 season Feb. 26 in Springfield, Missouri, when the team will compete in a two day dual-meet against Missouri State University.
After the dual meet, the Huskies will travel on March 8 to San Diego, California to compete in the Lamkin Grip San Diego Classic, which will be the Huskies’ first multi-team tournament of the year.
