Country Jamboree welcomes fans, participants
September 23, 1992
Country music fans can stomp to the beat or swing their partner around at this year’s Country Jamboree in Sycamore.
A jamboree featuring local country music talent will be held every third Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m. in Sycamore’s Community Center, 1425 W. State St.
The jamboree began four years ago in Sycamore at the home of George and Elaine Sailor. Eventually, the program outgrew the homes of its participants. The event’s organizer, Russ Boyer, decided to move the jamboree into the center.
“It’s just a real community thing,” Boyer said.
“We’ve had as many as 150 or 175 people (show up for the jamboree).”
elen Vlakancic, who is in charge of the jamboree’s mailing list, said the event attracted about 100 people its opening night.
“It’s quite popular,” Vlakancic said. “I like it.”
Boyer said performers come from all over northern Illinois, including cities as far away as Lemont and Lisle, to participate. One fiddler even comes from Wisconsin to play his fiddle, he added.
An “open mike” policy allows a variety of performers to join the fun. Boyer said this gives the event an air of unpredictability. Not even the organizers are sure about who will be performing, he said.
Performers have included a variety of acoustic and “amplified” musicians including Ronald Palmer, Rick Eldridge, Earl Gilbert, Dave Kolars and Arnold Lampkins.
The Country Jamboree is free, and refreshments will be provided. For more information on performing, call Russ Boyer at 895-9576 or 895-2125.
