NIU’s Athletic Board wasted no time getting into the swing of things at its first meeting of the 1992-93 academic year.
After Ray Dembinski passed on the baton to new board chairman Gip Seaver, the members got down to business.
Among the items discussed was a proposal to form an ad hoc committee to study the issue of gender equity at NIU. The proposal, which originated at the board’s final meeting of the 1991-92 academic year in May, comes in the wake of the NCAA establishing a gender equity task force.
“I would encourage us to consider expanding beyond the athletic board,” said O’Dell, in reference to having representation on the committee from other university departments. “We need to have other players in the university community be a part of this.”
Seaver said the proposal to form the committee will be further discussed at the board’s next meeting on Oct. 21.
“There is additional information I need to get,” Seaver said. “We will address this at the next meeting. I would like to have some time to study the issue.”
In other business, O’Dell presented the school’s NCAA Broad-Based Pool Budget for fiscal year 1993. NIU received $201,682 based on meeting the NCAA’s requirement of sponsored sports and scholarships in 1990-91.
Out of that income received, $192,682 is projected to be spent on NIU’s athletic teams. “The expenses are based on needs for the coaching staffs,” Associate Athletic Director Cary Groth said.
The board will vote on the budget at the Oct. 21 meeting.
Also, the board approved ticket prices for this season’s men’s basketball games.
The home schedule at Chick Evans Field House will feature 16 games with single-game tickets priced at $6 each. A public season ticket will cost $86, while faculty and staff will have the same seat for the year at a cost of $67.
