DeKALB一 Between Wednesday and Thursday, 74 people received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The DeKalb County Health Department partnered with NIU to administer complimentary Pfizer-BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson vaccines to students, faculty and staff.

The department’s mobile clinic was held outside MLK Commons from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. The clinic was staffed by student nurses and DCHD staff.

Public Health Administrator Lisa Gonzalez said she thought the mobile clinic was successful.

The process was quick and convenient. Marc Renko, senior industrial engineering major, said the mobile health clinic was “the most convenient” avenue for vaccination.

“I just didn’t want to do COVID surveillance testing every week,” Renko said. Unvaccinated students living on campus and taking face-to-face classes are required to undergo weekly, non-invasive, saliva-based testing.

“This is my second dose,” said Todd Meyer, senior industrial management and technology major. “I had my first one in Crystal Lake.”

Meyer also cited the COVID-19 surveillance testing as a motivator.

“After I leave here, I’m going to Student Health Services to tell them I don’t want to do that anymore,” Meyer said.

People who wanted a free vaccine chose between the two, filled out a short form and were then given a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The mobile clinic primarily offered the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which requires two doses for full effect and is now fully approved by the Food and Drug Administration

To receive the second dose, students are encouraged to visit The DeKalb County Health Department three to four weeks after they receive their first dose. The health department offers walk-in clinics Monday through Friday at 2550 N. Annie Glidden Road. The Pfizer-BioNTech clinic is on Tuesdays and Thursdays, according to the department’s website

“Vaccine types offered at each clinic are dependent on vaccine supply on hand,” Gonzalez said. “Pfizer is our most versatile vaccine as it is approved for 12 years of age and older. There is also significant demand for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine as it is just one dose.”
