DeKALB — NIU Athletic Director Sean Frazier released a statement Sunday afternoon addressing the game day experience for fans at Saturday’s football game at Huskie Stadium.

“Yesterday, we did not meet the standard that we hold ourselves to in terms of providing a superior gameday experience for all in attendance at Huskie Stadium,” Frazier said in a statement Sunday. “While we knew and thought we had properly planned for the post COVID challenges, it is obvious that we fell short of the mark.”

Fans reported long lines and delays at concession stands and water stations during the game Saturday. Temperatures were as high as 88 degrees during the game Saturday.

Frazier attributed the issues to concessions staff being short-handed.

“Our concessions and food services operations experienced staffing shortages, but that is not an excuse for the wait times and issues with being able to serve and sell water and our other products in a timely and efficient manner,” Frazier said.

NIU reported 11,334 fans were in attendance Saturday for NIU’s 50-43 loss to the University of Wyoming Cowboys.

NIU Athletics declined a request for further comment at this time.
