DeKALB – The DeKalb Police Department sent out a community alert Thursday to advise residents of a social media scam that has been reported in the city.

The scam is occurring on Facebook, where a person is tricked into thinking they’re communicating with an acquaintance. Users are sent direct messages or friend requests then are asked to send money. In some cases, suspects are deceiving victims by sending links for financial incentives. Residents who are receiving these messages are urged to delete them.

If a resident receives an unfamiliar message, they should contact the person through a method where verifying the identity is possible like through a phone call or meeting in person. Additionally, residents are reminded to not give out any personal information online.

Any reports of suspicious activity can be reported to the DeKalb Police Department at 815-748-8400 or 911 during an emergency.
