DeKALB – The American Red Cross is urgently looking for donors of all blood types to donate to combat a record shortage of blood and platelets, according to a Monday Red Cross news release. This is the lowest level of blood inventory the Red Cross has dealt with during the fall months since 2015.
The Red Cross needs to collect 10,000 blood donations every week for the next month to meet hospital and patient needs.
“Fall is typically a time when the blood supply rebounds as donors are more available to give than during the busy summer months, but this year has presented a unique and serious challenge,” said Dr. Pampee Young, chief medical officer for the Red Cross in a news release.
The Red Cross is working with companies to encourage donors, Sports Clips Haircuts is offering a coupon for a free haircut. Red Cross is also offering a $5 gift card and a limited edition football inspired T-Shirt to those who donate in October.
