Diverse values

This letter is in response to Mr. Keith Berkhout’s letter addressed as “Wear Black” on April 9th. Mr. Berkhout seems to think that this country of ours was founded on strong Christian values.

Abortion, violence, sex and homosexuality are all due to diminishing Christian values. I beg to differ!! First of all, I would like to introduce my opinion by stating that America was founded on democracy and “Freedom.” The reason this country is the most powerful and influential nation in the world is due to what our ancestors have been able to accomplish due to the diversity and freedom this country has to offer us, not Christian values.

I believe this country and the world in general has its problems, but adopting Christian values is definitely not the answer, nor is rejecting homosexuality. I would also like to say that I am a heterosexual male and I do not understand homosexuality. I’m sure there are plenty of males out there that adopt this same belief, but that doesn’t give us the right to bash homosexuals because of what they believe. I believe that this country needs to adopt a positive attitude towards respecting what (people) are as human beings not what religion, gender, race or sexual preference they have.

This attitude is what will make the country move in a positive direction, not adopting values certain religions believe in. In case Mr. Berkhout hasn’t noticed there is more than one religion in this country and just because Leviticus 18:22 says that homosexuality is forbidden and that it is a sin, doesn’t mean everyone in the nation will believe this. Nor should the nation be forced to believe this, just like no one should be forced to believe in homosexuality. Everyone has their own beliefs and values. If you can’t respect a person as a fellow human, you are going to be the one who contributes to the increasing amount of problems this world already has to deal with.
