Gay/lesbian awareness events planned

The week of April 6-11 is Gay/Lesbian Awareness Week. The NIU Gay Lesbian Union and the Gay Lesbian Alliance will be sponsoring events throughout the week.

Monday – Brown bag luncheon from 12 to 1 p.m. at University Resources for Women. Speaker Susan Powell from the CSDC will discuss “Creating a Positive Climate for Lesbian Gay and Bisexual People.”

Lecture on “Midwest Gay History” at 8:45 p.m. in the Holmes Student Center’s Illinois Room. The lecture is sponsored by the Gay Lesbian Alliance.

Tuesday – GLY Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Illinois Room and the GLU office at HSC 256A. All “friends, foes, allies, and advocates are welcome.”

Concert by Romanowski and Phillips at 8:45 p.m. in the Sandburg Auditorium. Admission is free and the event is sponsored by CAB and the GLU.

Wednesday – Clothing Day. The event was dubbed “Jeans Day” in the past but has been changed. Last year, all those who supported human rights were to wear jeans.

Panel Discussion, “Air Your Dirty Laundry: Express Your Likes, Hates and Confusions,” 8 to 9:30 p.m., Lincoln Hall, Classroom B. Sponsored by GLU Allies and Advocates.

Thursday – Poetry reading by Marily Montiero, NIU director of Affirmative Action, 12 to 1 p.m., Wesley Foundation, first floor lounge. SPonsored by the GLA.

Discussion by Tim Drake, a Republican candidate for the state House of Representatives, titled “Gay and Lesbian Rights: A Legislative Overview,” 8:45 p.m. at the NIU Art Museum, second floor, Altgeld Hall. Sponsored by the GLY and GLA.

Friday – Communications Skills Workshop for “Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Intimate Relationships,” Call the Counseling and Student Development office at 753-1206 for details.

Movie, “Witches, Dykes, Faggots and Poopsters,” sponsored by Cine Club at 7:30 p.m. in Cole Hall 100.

Saturday – Dinner Dance. Call the GLU office at 753-0594 for details.
