UPs to hold annual auction

By Philip Dalton

Odds are if a bike or baby stroller has disappeared from the family garage, the items can be found at the annual University Police auction tomorrow.

The UPs will be holding their annual auction of confiscated and unclaimed property Saturday. The auction begins at 10 a.m. in the center lobby of NIU’s Huskie Stadium.

Items will be available for inspection one hour before the bidding begins, and bidding numbers can also be obtained at this time.

Some of the items that will be up for sale include backpacks, coolers, walkmans, umbrellas, baseball gloves, calculators, baby strollers and more than 70 bicycles.

The items up for bid this weekend were obtained by police as either abandoned property or stolen property that has remained unclaimed. UP Lt. Kathy Guimond said the property ranged in condition from very good to useable.

The profits from the event will be placed in a general university fund. Guimond said the auction usually has a pretty good turnout, and she encourages people to come out.

She said she felt students could fare well at the auction, considering the bargains that they can find.

If anyone has had anything lost or stolen recently and can prove ownership, NIU police encourage them to contact the department immediately.
