Committee discusses minority perceptions

Possible plans for a display dealing with minority students’ perceptions of themselves and their relationship with the NIU community were discussed at Wednesday’s Unity In Diversity Steering Committee meeting.

The committee discussed the possibility of repeating a project called “The Wall,” which was successfully done by a campus ministry group at the University of Southern California.

The group conducted a survey of students and asked them to check off their background (Hispanic, Caucasian,

African-American). The students then wrote comments about how they felt about their background.

Wesley Foundation Campus Minister David Schmidt noted recent letters by people of different backgrounds sent to The Northern Star might indicate that some people feel isolated and misunderstood.

“It is (the committee’s) feeling that students would find it helpful to express their feelings about their race or background,” Schmidt said.

In other business, the committee discussed the results from distributing the recent Unity In Diversity supplement in the Star.

Committee chairperson Brunson said one problem with the supplements was that many of them ended up on the floor instead of being read.

The committee also discussed the Unity In Diversity theme for 1992-93. Brunson said he wanted to have a theme before the end of the academic year, which would give students working on the project for next year some direction.

The next committee meeting will be at noon on April 1 in the Holmes Student Center’s Blackhawk East Room.
