Greeks to hold dances, shows

Valentines Day for the greek fraternities and sororities is traditionally filled with greek dances and celebrations and this year is no exception.

The greek system at NIU will hold numerous dances and activities this weekend as part of its annual “Greek Weekend,” said Dawn Sturma, NIU’s greek affairs activity adviser.

Several greek houses will hold dances and exchanges this weekend. “Our annual dance will be held Saturday at 10 p.m.,” Sigma Lambda Sigma President Laura Tau said.

The greek system along with other NIU organizations also will hold a community service day Saturday to benefit DeKalb, Sturma said.

“There also will be a talent and variety show for the greeks system’s benefit on Sunday.” Sturma said. “We want to promote spirit and involvement.”

The greek weekend finale will be Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. when Indiana University Professor Carolyn Thomas will speak in the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington Ballroom. The purpose of the speech is to promote communication among the races, Sturma said.

The speech is open to the general public and all are invited to attend, Sturma said.

Some greek houses have planned formal dances to be held in local hotels. Sigma Chi President Mike Colwell said “We will be having a formal dance at Days Inn on Saturday night. Our members should just grab a date and go.”
