Women netters set for Michigan swing

The NIU women’s tennis team hopes to get back on the winning track when it travels to Michigan State University tonight for a 6 p.m. meet.

Following last weekend’s split while visiting Milwaukee, the Huskies will be looking to improve on their 4-3 ledger to date.

The weekend started with a 6-3 triumph over Memphis State, but went bittersweet with a 7-1 defeat at the hands of the Marquette Warriors.

NIU’s standout Sarah Murfey led the way on both days with straight-set victories at the No. 1 singles slot.

Meanwhile, the No. 1 doubles combination of Jami Cheek and Breda Dean scored a dominating 6-1, 6-3 win on Saturday, but came up empty versus Marquette, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. “Breda and Jami played a great match against two Marquette veterans,” NIU coach Patty Groth said.

NIU will continue on to Kalamazoo to face Western Michigan for another 6 p.m. match on Friday.
