Wrestlers hope to end year on winning note

The 2-16 NIU wrestling team will try and end its season on a winning note when Central Michigan visits the Chick Evans Field House for a noon match today.

Central Michigan is an opponent the Huskies know little about. However, they do know one thing: ISU, who narrowly defeated the Huskies the two times the teams met (30-24 and 24-18), beat Central Michigan earlier in the year.

“They have a new coach, so they’ll be pretty much a surprise,” NIU head coach Ed Vatch said. “They have a pretty tough lineup. I know they have four or five kids who are pretty strong.”

If the Huskies can produce like they did against ISU Wednesday night (four straight wins after the 158-pound match), and pull out the matches they are capable of, the Huskies can come out victorious.

“Against ISU there were a lot of ways we could have won,” Vatch said. “We gave up six points with the forfeit (at 142 pounds), and there were a couple of matches we didn’t expect to lose, but we’re looking better.”
